Today brought us back into the tower to see the creative masterpieces done by our colleagues. Wow, so much has happened since we were here Feb. 9. We changed the Sky to feel as if a wind has swept the valley of imagination. Being inspired by our childhood literature, we created a valley in front of a mountain range, and added houses to the front of the painting. Little Red Riding Hood has appeared and we felt she needed a village. The steps on the right became houses with doors and the Greek architecture from the left side was mimicked on the right. The whimsical heart tree and the balloon tree were left as sketches to add a touch of gentleness in an otherwise frightful dream in the sky.

Mariana did such a wonderful job of pulling together a mystical scene. I love the references to Santorini – a most magical and mystical spot! The feeling I had on coming in today and seeing what has evolved was that we were drawing a dream so I turned the round shape at the bottom left into a little boy with his eyes closed. I also worked on the shape at the far right. The clown-like character actually scared me, so I softened it into another dreaming face. At Jordan’s suggestion, I pushed the mountains back a bit. I also added a moon as well as some moonlight on the caldera. I like the two sides with stairways leading to and away from the center, but I think there is still room to distinguish the area in the middle – either by simplifying it or making it more unified or by making it more “dense”. What fun it was to come back after a week to see how this panel had changed!!

I am delightfully haunted by the emerging mystery that is portrayed in this graphics/pastel construction. My approach was to locate muted color and form in places that called to me.. as I got moving, I began to see mythological forms lurking about and around the human figures. The lurking forms are prompting to move the distressed damsel toward the light and safety. There is a tension between darks and lights – good and evil? – with the traditionally sly fox, perhaps, being the eyes of protection on the dynamic scene.

And what is that developed city in the distance? Is it a lost city that has been snuffed out by the more organic and grounded old fashioned small town, protected by castle and by church-like fortresses?

I’ve added color and shades in various places, and I turn to others to help balance shapes, darks and lights with the intensity they need to

finish out the story.

Parvaneh Limbert, Ann Bolster, and I work independently using blues and greens, reds and purples, and yellows and oranges. We continued to strengthen the colors and texture thru out the painting. We felt the painting needed to be lightened in the right hand corner to give a sense of movement upward in the ocean. We work on Venus hair and feel that the next artist should extend the hair tendrils into the curvature of the waves going to the right side of the painting in order to unify Venus with the whole of the painting. What a nice opportunity and challenge we had working together on the painting.

Thursday, February 16, 2012 Happy Birthday Jordan!!!

Wow! What a dynamic and colorful piece this is becoming! I like its diagonals and the variety of shapes (both geometric and organic) as well as the many colors…at the same time, it felt to me that we needed some “muting of color” in some places, to make the remaining bright color stand out.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it needed a bit of depth. An under water scene to me, conjures transparency (it does not help that I just returned from a vacation in the Cayman islands where the snorkeling was spectacular). To that effect, I began to draw some “wavey” shapes with just chalk and a bit of pastel (can be removed). My idea was to photograph before and after and see if I liked it, before committing to acrylic glazing to “veil” some areas and to add or render some shapes with softer edges, to create the illusion of things being “in and out of focus” (=>depth). But I ran out of time working on the monochrome piece instead. Next time, if I still have this impression after examining the progress of this colorful piece , I may try to execute that plan. Of course, someone might have done it by then, and it is great, either way. Enjoy very much and thank you all and to Jordan for this opportunity! Have fun,

The painting certainly changed today. Overall, we felt the orange and yellow needed to be toned down and to integrate the right side with the left. Because of the one face we decided to insert Botticelli’s Venus. The bottom right side was tweaked a little to exaggerate the wave and continue the fish up to top. We would like to keep the Venus that Joan worked on so beautifully. We had a lot of fun today and will be very interested in seeing what happens next.

Joan Mazer here again! I continued changing the colors to suit the mood of the sea as I experience it in my head. Observing the work I did today, I realize that there are still a lot of shapes that could emerge further from what is currently on the surface but that it was much more fun working with other artists present. On the other hand, a lot of people came through the gallery and commented on the color scheme!(?)

Thursday, February 16, 2012: Happy Birthday Jordan!!!

I was immediately struck by how strong this piece seemed to be becoming: the monochrome scheme gives it power and the elongated horizontal “picture plane” makes a powerful statement. The challenge is to link, in some way, the multiple representational shapes (wolf, hands, monster, vines…) which are all beautifully rendered.

After some reflection on the overall composition, I thought that it needed a stronger top half of the picture. Since I could not quite “turn it over”, as we do sometimes, to evaluate the design upside down, I took a picture with my camera. I was able to look at that upside down. It confirmed my suspicion that the top half seemed not to be anchored nor related strongly to the rest of the painting.

As I began to think about a solution, I thought about a high horizon, as if the viewer is looking down (following the tracks of the person who was inspired by the “Cannes rooftops” motif).

I then realized that adding a high horizon to this dreamlike composition reminded me very much of the island of Santorini, in Greece. I went to the web and found some images that inspired me to include some geometric rooftops and stairways. (for your information, see desktop file I created called “Santorini”).

I traced a high horizon with a loose rendition of the opposite land mass that encompasses the border of the “Caldera” or the ancient volcano center that is said to be buried under the deep sea of the Cyclades. The Island is unbelievably beautiful and very dramatic, as it rises out of huge elevations and dips of terrain of mixed rock and volcanic soil, the latter is largely black. Its buildings and inhabitants are perched on the arbitrary ups and downs of the terrain and stairs RULE everywhere you go. It is the perfect “workout” island!.

But Santorini is also a mysterious island, standing alone in its configuration among Greek isles and considered unique and “different”. The latter possibly fueled much of the historic and religious lore that surrounds the island. It is said to have been inhabited by and vampires who supposedly thrived there after being “banished” from cities. One has to wonder if the large number of Santorini churches one sees is related to such beliefs.

See if you think this is a fitting notion to inspire us towards the finish…

On the technical side, the areas of the painting with powdered graphite lend themselves to absorb almost no other medium on top…since the gesso surface is saturated. I found that working patiently with some charcoal/pastels would allow some darkening but not enough to get the value needed. I had some more success working with a bristle brush and water in smoothing out some areas that appeared almost “scratched” by the pastel or charcoal. We also need some white of a kind that is “reversible” like white pastels (we have only 5-6 tiny pieces), white gouache or casein or even permanent white (or Chinese white) which is similar. I will try to bring some next time. Our alternative is to do gesso, but I did not want to start using an acrylic on this surface. But you are welcome to differ and do otherwise, the most important thing is that it was fun!

I added some “fur” to the wolf. I wanted to balance some of the sienna color from the middle of the drawing. Then, I had to think… wolf… hunter… eerier looking woods… little red riding hood! So, she appears running from the woods to what she thinks is Grandma’s house… but it is in another house… oh well… a little more fantasy to this piece. I then looked at the other side of the panel which was pretty bare. There seemed to be a theme of “hands” developing, so I added one on an arm to “hug”.

I guess I needed to soften some of the colors. I did that up in the right upper corner and I tried to bring in some more blues to the top edge. The bubbles feel lighter to me now. All the yellows took me away from the sea, so I felt the need to contrast the yellowy waves with blue background. Sorry, Joan, I began work on your face…just a little.

Becky and I went for balance and connection in the colors. In general, we felt the painting needed more blues, greens and purples, but we also like the excitement and surprise of red so I enlarged the ball and deepened it’s red. I also added more red to the fish.

Becky added a mouth and eye to the large fish and continued the wave to the lower right of the canvas. We worked a lot on the waves, giving them more depth and we would like to see more purple in the canvas. We had a lot of fun and look forward to seeing how the painting changes when we return next week.

I was so excited to participate in this collaborative effort to be able to work together with other artist and cannot wait to see how this painting evolves and how we “resolve” it.

As I came back to the Stone Tower where I was the Artist-in Residence twice in the past two years, the task was different… I had in front of me 2 panels others started to work on, and I had to react to it.

My plan for today was to work with color rather than on the graphite painting. The dialogue begun when the first challenge was to get into the mood of the painting. The geometrical shapes had movement, but were too “hard edge” for my style of painting. The panel was still with lots of unpainted areas. I realized that I needed to paint in order to eliminate the “white spaces” in order to understand more of what is in front of me. With a big brush at hand, and intermittently using a long palette knife, I felt that I added some vibration to the painting and my own style.

I felt comfortable with the size of the panel since I also work on large scale paintings. I can’t wait to continue the work using oil paint as well.

This has been a challenging and a wonderful new experience for me.

It takes a lot of paint to cover this panel! I’m not used to such a large scale. Even mixing paint was a challenge. I hope you all like bold colors. My favorite part is where the brown/orange coral meets the dark purple, so try to leave that area alone. Otherwise, go to town. This is a lot of fun, anyone not participating is missing out.

Wow! The Sea! We were inspired by the orange and added more color and free form organic shapes. The painting needed grounding so we added a piece of coral to take the focus away from the center. Mixing “mud” we helped to create more depth to the painting. We can’t wait to see the additions when we return at the end of the month. Enjoy!

We began our creative process by admiring the wolf on the top left. We become representational and then quickly decided that abstraction was the way to proceed. We moved the center focus more to the left and progressed from the existing face to a flower pot to the current abstraction. The top left windows need some warming up, so the moon appeared and the fish fell out the window. Whether or not this tells a story is up to your imagination. Good luck, have fun!

Hi, I’m the next artist. I looked at the drawing as if it were a Rorschach test, and let it speak to me. Wanting to bring out spatial depth, contrast, and negative/positive space within the vast expanse, I tried to drive a feeling of whoosh and movement across the “sky” above the hint of horizon, to start

horizontally unifying the composition. Tried not to let it get too weird, but I did put in the tiny people, the fish, the hands, and I made the “cloud” a “creature.” The left wave of existing tone suggested a wolf to me. Drawing him suddenly felt primal. I was at one with the cave painters--and with Marc Chagall! Who knows if cave paintings were individual or group efforts, but welcome to our local, mystical cave!

I wanted to add mood to Debbie’s “bones”. Using powdered graphite and erasers, I darkened the sky in the West, added another cloud and then provided some dimension to another cloud. The panel is so large that I felt the need to cover ground quickly. Then, I decided it might be better to leave the Eastern sky alone so that someone else could bring his or her perspective to the time of day and the weather. I find using powdered graphite for drawing to be exciting and expressive. It has really loosened me up as I approach my work these days. Thank you, Jordan, for giving me this tool!!

I picked up where Nan left off this afternoon. Inspired by work I found in this fall in Berlin from French art nouveaux/cubist painter, Jean Lambert-Rucki (1888-1967), I felt the urge to add a touch of humanity and humor (hopefully it is seen as humor) into the sky space. I then built off the angles of what felt to me to be buildings, added further lines and angles and a stairway to the sky (off to the right). In the sky, I got a kick out of playing with the waves of graphite as I explored the darks and lights of the space and of the medium. I found of interest that the different tools and media that I used – graphite, charcoal, pencil, and compressed charcoal—all responded in entirely unpredictable ways to the wood canvas we are using. In the end, I am not sure where the work is moving, but I certainly became absorbed in the forms, darks/lights, and flow of the working process. Not a bad start. I look forward to seeing where the next artist takes this.

Starting out on this huge panel is very intimidating, but I gathered my courage and gave it a shot! I went for a composition with strong diagonals to lead your eye across the panel. I loosely borrowed building shapes from “View of Cannes, Evening”. The composition is very simplistic, but I think as we all put in our different style, the simplicity will be an advantage. If anyone has a more inspiring way to start, I will not be insulted if you want to start over. Have fun! Debbie

I’m a realist painter by nature and so in thinking about what I wanted to add that was personal, I drew my face in a distorted style, so far, just in pencil. If I get to paint it, I think I’d do it in shades of gray to contrast with what I think the rest of the canvas will look like. It’s a little disconcerting to have such a huge canvas facing me. I’m curious to see how everyone’s palettes will blend OR NOT!

A Letter from the Organizer

Here we are again! It’s February, so it’s time for our Yellow Barn Collaboration! Last year the Yellow Barn Instructors banded together to collaborate on some pretty awesome artworks. We created three paintings over the month of February in a relay fashion with each instructor adding their personal touch to the artwork. This time around, I’m leaving it up to my advanced students! We’ll have two LARGE panels (72x30”) to work on for the month, one incorporating drawing media, the other paint. The progress will be posted here daily so check back often!

Our artists will also be keeping a digital journal, writing about their experience with working in collaboration. They will be writing notes to their comrades explaining their choices, if they do not want anyone changing what they were working on, and if they would like future artists to embellish their work. This is about community as much as it is about collaboration.

As collaboration organizer, I will periodically be suggesting themes, approaches and possible directions for our 30 artists to work in, but will no way work on the paintings and drawings.

If you would like to see the art in person, the Stone Tower 1^st floor will be open daily from 11:00-5:00pm.

We invite everyone to follow our progress and if you have suggestions for our collaboration, please send an email to Jordan@jjbruns.com. I’ll pass the suggestions on to our artists and maybe even post them in our digital journal!

For the month of February the Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery, which boasts 600 members and 40 classes per semester, will be showing off some of its best and brightest advanced level students in the Chautauqua Tower 1^st floor studio. Starting February 2^nd, the Chautauqua Tower (“Stone Tower”), which usually houses one resident artist for one month, will display the collaboration between 30 Yellow Barn artists. The artists will be working on one large 72 x 28” painting/drawing in a relay style fashion. They will each display their unique styles and different approaches to painting. The artists’ progress will be documented throughout the month with photographs that will be posted on the Yellow Barn blog (http://yellowbarnstudio.blogspot.com/) and Facebook. These posts will allow each artist to discuss what they are working on as well as their different approaches and impressions of painting. The Yellow Barn invites the public to visit the space, ask questions of our artists, and see the artists working together.

While we have a reputation for great instructors that produce great artists, we also have a great community that enjoys working together.” says J. Now Accepting Applications for the 2012 Stone Tower Residency

Looking for a residency close to home? The Chautauqua Tower 1st floor is a dream studio! We taking applications for March, April, May and June now!

Application guidelines:

1) Demonstrate professional artistic credentials, including previous gallery exhibits (include biography and resume of art training)
2) Describe work you would do while resident in the Stone Tower Studio which would be inviting to the public, and enriching to the Yellow Barn community, include demonstrations & lectures. Certify your ability to keep the studio open at least 30 hours a week, including at least 16 weekend hours each week.
3) Explain what your previous experience with the Yellow Barn has meant to you, and how your presence in the Stone Tower studio will serve to introduce the public to the Yellow Barn, encourage new students, and attract potential buyers for art available in the Stone Tower, and at weekend shows in the Yellow Barn Gallery. (If you have no experience with the Yellow Barn, please explain how and what you know about the Yellow Barn)
4) Submit a portfolio of photographs of recent work as email attachments (6 to 10 paintings/drawings) or provide the url of your website.

Outline of major requirements:

a) The Resident Artist (RA) must have the studio open to the public at least 30 hours a week (including noon to 6 p. m. on Saturdays and Sundays)

b) The RA contributes approximately $690 ($500 for Jan, Feb, and Aug) back to the Friends of the Yellow Barn toward rent and utilities-$200 non-refundable due to reserve a specific month check due prior to the month of residency.

c) The RA handles all sales, is responsible for paying MD state sales tax, and contributes back 30% of all sales to the Friends.

d) The RA must offer at least two events (lectures/demonstrations/reception) free to members of the Friends, and the public.

e) The RA should be covered by professional or homeowner's liability insurance ($1 million); may also wish to have personal property insurance, as none can be provided by the Friends or the Yellow Barn.

f) The RA is responsible for publicizing the residency. The Friends will provide wall lettering.

Once an agreement is reached to reserve a month for an artist (they must make a $200 non-refundable deposit before we post their name and month) this is what we need for the Yellow Barn website:

1) A one-page poster to put up on the Stone Tower page--This should have a heading similar to the ones previously posted

It should include a picture, preferably of the artist, perhaps in front of a painting, a paragraph describing the residency, and a schedule for open hours, and planned events. This can be posted by our webmaster any time it is ready, preferably one month ahead.

Text for informational box on homepage--this should have about 100 words of text (a brief artist's statement) and a file of an image of a piece of artwork. This should complement, but not be the same as the text on the one-pager, as people can link from it to the one-pager. This box is posted by our webmaster on the first of the month and may be abbreviated or placed lower on the page, depending on other Yellow Barn information that needs to be included at any given time.

The Stone Tower studio space, a beautiful place to work and show art, is available during February through June 2012 for rent to members of the Friends who have shown their work professionally. This can be for a month or more, a single artist, or a team of two. Applications should be submitted to Jordan Bruns at jordan@jjbruns.com by January 15, 2012. J. Jordan Bruns, in cooperation with The Friends of the Yellow Barn, is holding a drawing exhibition open to ALL members of the Friends of the Yellow Barn. The exhibition will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 20th and 21st, 2011, from 12:00pm-5:00pm. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Saturday from 5:00-7:00pm.

Eligibility Requirements

· All work must be created with a drawing medium (no paint!)

· Artists must have framed drawings, ready to hang

· Artists must be a "Friends of the Yellow Barn Member"

· Artists must be willing to share the promotional and reception costs

To Participate:

1-3 drawings can be submitted to the exhibition, no size restrictions

Please send the information: Name, Title, Medium, Price for each piece and make sure that the info is on the back of the drawing upon drop off.

Email J. Jordan Bruns, Yellow Barn Studio Manager, at jordan@jjbruns.com to let him know you would like to exhibit.

Include a jpg of one of your drawings if you would like to be included in the promotional material.

Please indicate if you are able to 1) help hang the exhibition on Friday night or 2) able to gallery watch while the exhibition is running on Saturday or Sunday, 12-5pm.

You must have your work dropped off at the Yellow Barn on Friday, August 19th at 6:30pm for installation.

The soft colors and ethereal feel of these paintings and sculptures immediately transport you to the beach. Shells and bones washed up by the tide, while intriguing enough as pure form, are even more interesting as reflections of what used to surround or inhabit them; their structure wholly revealed only after their original function has ceased.

Rachel Collins’ watercolors and Jessica Beels’ paper sculptures explore the spaces in and around shells and bones as landscapes and abstracted forms, examining light play and shadows and revealing inner structures and hidden echoes.

ArtSpace is extremely pleased to be presenting this exhibit by talented local artists. “This is a wonderful summertime exhibit that will capture the imagination of all viewers and evoke a youthful sense of the wonder of nature and the forms and structures around us,” said Robin Carroll of ArtSpace. Rachel Collins watercolors are beautiful and Jessica Beels’s sculptures are airy and light.

1. Where and how would you display your work in an ideal situation?

Image a tall stone tower. Let's say 5-7 stories tall. It will have a spiral staircase in the center, and at the top of the stair case, a big white cube-shaped room with tons of strategically placed sky lights and very nice track lighting that adjusts with the time of day. White walls, very clean oak hardwood floors with comfortable benches placed around the hole in the center of the floor where the stair case emerges. Climbing the staircase would make the viewer a bit dizzy, which I think would be kind of fun.

2. If expository writing is good at elucidating and proving a point and descriptive geometry gives us the tools by which to map objects in space in relation to one another, what kind of an apparatus does art afford us? What does art do best?

Well, I'll answer this question as it applies to painting. Good painting asks questions. It's at its best when the viewer has to work to connect the dots. This means that not everything is explained at first, and the viewer is forced to ponder, decipher and examine the painting to get the most out of it. I get very bored when people try and paint a painting just like a photograph. It's equivalent to someone giving you $10,000 for doing nothing; the work would not be worth as much as if you had worked for the $10,000, except for the emotional worth. Good painting asks questions of/for the viewer, and when/if that happens, it is more rewarding and enjoyable. People grow from art.

3. What can you expect from your audience/fans/viewing public? What would you like them to know about your work?

I don't expect anything, really. However, I do wish that everyone did not just see the post apocalyptic world in my work. I don't deny that there are elements of destruction, but I still see the rebirth in it too. The themes I explore are akin to a yin and yang. I think everyone is just so depressed about the state of our economy, jobs, wars that everyone just looks for the negative in every situation. At the same time, I don't want to be known as the guy who is "so cheerful in person, but paints such disturbing subject matter!"

4. Marcel Duchamp said - "Enough with retinal art!" What is your reaction as an artist to this statement?

I would say, "Have fun playing chess for the rest of your life!" I remember going to Philadelphia and seeing some of his work. Duchamp painted a painting for every art movement from Impressionism to Cubism, and Philly had one of his from each - all in a row. It looked like he mimicked the movement, got all he could out of it, and moved on. As if all of Cubism could be explained in one painting! This is not to say I don't agree. I think that there needs to be a balance between retinal and thought-provoking.

5. Do you think that there is still room for art movements in today's pluralistic climate?

I think it kind of depends on how artists persevere. When painting first had to deal with photography, everyone said that "painting was dead." Painting evolved, thankfully, and was more interesting, said more, and it truly was better off. Now, photographers have to deal with all the Sunday afternoon digital photographers. Everyone is a photographer now, and the skill and craft loses some importance. Not everyone is trained to understand what makes good pictures. I think that when everyone can do art as well as everyone else, art will cease to exist.

6. What is one question you wished we had asked you about your art? Please feel free to answer it.

How about the age old battle between form and content. Which is more important?

The Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health is a residential "place like home" for sick children and their families. ABOUT THE ARTIST
Long-time gardener and environmentalist, Christine Lashley, will exhibit her impressions of natural spaces, from the formal gardens of France and Italy to her own Certified Natural Habitat backyard. Christine’s artwork explores the role of plants in our lives in traditional and less conventional ways.

Christine Lashley earned her BFA at Washington University in St. Louis, after studying in Paris at the Parsons Art Institute and the Sorbonne. She has held many solo shows in different areas of the country and has competed in numerous juried exhibitions, winning many top awards. Christine’s work has been featured in publications such as: American Artist Magazine, Elan Magazine and The Washington Post. She has earned signature membership in several juried art organizations. An art instructor for over 10 years, she is a faculty member of several art academies in the DC area, including ArtSpace.

PLEIN AIR COMPETITION AT RIVERBEND PARK

In fact a series of competitions--twice a month--the first to be a a week from this Saturday--that's Saturday, March 12, 2011.

All painters are welcome to compete for the $100.00 prize--winner to be determined by vote of the participants.

There is a $10 entry fee--with ALL proceeds going directly to the park.

The rules are simple: show up at the park between 7am and 9am and have your canvas stamped--all artwork must be produced on the day of the competition and on the grounds of Riverbend Park.

Prize money will be contributed by local sponsors.
Have your canvas turned in and ready for judging by 12:30pm. There will be a grace period of five minutes, after which artwork will be disqualified!

If fewer than four artists show up there will be no competition, so encourage your friends to take part.

In fact, please forward this notice to every artist you know!

Day 23- Tom Semmes, Glen Kessler

Day 23- Glen Kessler snuck into the Stone Tower early today to fix the upper left corner of the Self Portrait/Still Life painting. "It has been really bothering me," said Glen, "I wasn't planning on working on it anymore, but I had a great idea and came in early to knock it out."
Tom Semmes finished up the day with some decisive surgery to the Carousel Painting. "Now it's exciting!" said Tom, "It was kind of hovering between a really serious painting and... the hot dog painting. I think that it's more unified with the balloons."
Personally, its a welcome view of a carousel that has been painted so seriously for so long. It's nice to view the carousel much like a kid does, exciting!

There are a few loose ends that will be tackled when Jordan Bruns paints on our final day in the tower. "Just clean up the last of the loose ends!" Bruns says, "For the most part, the paintings are done and I'm really excited about the work we ended up with. I had moments of fear, but I think that we came together in the ends to make good paintings."

Be sure to stop by tomorrow for our "Yellow Barn Open House" from 11:00-5:00pm. You can see demos by our instructors and also have the chance to bid on the 3 collaboration paintings we've been working so hard to create! They'll be worth something someday!

Day 22- Martha Spak

Day 22- Martha Spak, (with a little help from Walt Bartman earlier in the week) brought us a little closer to order in the paintings. With the last couple of days before we say goodbye to our masterpieces, we are working hard to bring the pieces to a "finished" state.
"The abstract painting is closest to being finished at this point," says Jordan Bruns, "you could work on that one forever, but I think that all the major kinks are getting close to being ironed out. I also think that once the upper left corner of the still life/self portrait painting is resolved, that piece could be considered finished too. Tom's got a little more work ahead of him on Friday."

Day 19- Walt Bartman

Day 17- It was only a matter of time before something like this happens. "Don't mess with my portrait." Bartman says. "I think it comes down to respecting what other artists do. When your going to build on an idea its good, when you eliminate it, its not good." We're all trying to make a painting that is our own personal signature. If you take those personal signatures out, your deluding the uniqueness of the project."

Day 18- Jordan Bruns

Day 18- Not sure how he did it, Jordan Bruns resolved his likeness in the self portrait/still life painting today. It may take a magnifying glass, but he's in there doing his "James in the Giant Peach" impression.
"Not sure why I decided to paint that small... it took a brush that looks like it has 3 bristles!"

Day 17- Glen Kessler, Drawing and Painting

Day 17- Glen Kessler began the unification process today, using the previously painted information and melding it into a more cohesive painting. Glen, a classically trained painter, created a dramatic space by using black paint. He also brought up the light as was discussed with Eric Garner the day before.
"I approached the painting as if I were discussing it with my students," Kessler says, "three quarters the way done, it's time to start pulling it together." Tomorrow, Jordan Bruns and Lida Stifel will be painting from 11:00-5:00pm. Let us know what you think on Facebook!

Day 16- Eric Garner

Day 16- While working on the Abstract Painting today, Eric Garner and Glen Kessler talked about the importance of pulling all the pieces together.
"We have a week left," said Kessler, "tomorrow I'll work toward unifying the pieces."
In our latest interview, Eric Garner talks about his suggestions for the three collaboration paintings. "I'm most excited about the abstract piece," Eric says, "I think it's really coming together to be an interesting painting."

Day 14- Bonny Lundy and Walt Bartman

Day 14- Just when you thought the Carousel painting was getting boring.... something happened. It came in the form of a hot dog bought at Seven Eleven.

"It actually really breaks up that foreground space beautifully!" Said Bonny.

The two of them worked on the carousel piece yesterday, bringing new life into the project. No one said we weren't having fun.

"You know, I go home and dream about this," Bartman says, "I keep thinking of ways to improve the paintings!"

Day 13- Jordan Bruns

Day 13- After continuously observing the great work being done by the Yellow Barn artists, Jordan Bruns worked into the abstract piece. "Needs more color balance", he thought as he worked into the oranges and blues, attempting to create spatial effects with color. "I still think that the piece needs a better entrance to the composition, but I did what I did."

It's really not an easy feat to preserve what other have done before you while still staying true to your beliefs as a painter. There is a fine to walk between improving the piece and wrecking the fine work that had been done before you.

Day 11- Daniel Wise, Pastel Instructor

Day 11- Daniel Wise, a magician with pastels, chose to work on the Carousel painting today. I often marvel at how patient some of our artists/instructors are here at the barn. Daniel is definitely one who gives a lot of thought to the paint color, tone, and thickness before he places the brush to the canvas.
During our interview today, I found out that he paints every day from 5:30am to 11:00am, before going to his "day job". Talk about passion and dedication to the craft!

Day 10- Glen Kessler and Gavin

Day 10- Glen Kessler decides to throw us all a curve ball and a call to raise the bar. He thoughtfully renders his likeness but as his fellow artists had envisioned. He juxtaposes his head into the painting as if it were a still life object. An an interview you won't want to miss.

Day 9- Eric Garner, Abstract Painting

Day 9- The abstract painting is getting a little something different today. The Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery boasts a wide range of styles with it's instructors, and Eric Garner is all about the precision in his abstract work.
He talks about his collaboration with Natasha Karpinskaia, who's style is more "atmospheric". While they have very different styles and approaches to painting, it's coming together as a cohesive piece.

Day 8- Lida Stifel, Advanced Figure Drawing

Day 8- Lida Stifel added her image to the portrait painting today. Her face is peeking over Walt Bartman's shoulder, right above the mirror frame. Lida set the bar for clever ways to incorporate the self portrait into the painting.
Finding an additional mirror from the Yellow Barn still life library, she used the mirror to paint her portrait from a different perspective than both Walt and Christine.

Day 7- Natasha Karpinskaia, Walt Bartman

Day 7- I could smell the oil paint the second I entered the first floor stone tower studio to take photos today. Natasha started off this morning revamping the abstraction, turning it on its side, and painting out some of the more congested parts. "It needed a place to breath, it was too busy for me." It certainly opened the piece up for the next artists!

Walt Bartman followed later, changing some of what he had previously done on Monday. "Now we have a composition, now we have a story!", he remarked after painting the frame of the mirror on the canvas as well as some of the still life objects.

Since we have completed the first whole week of painting, we've posted the bid sheets to purchase the artwork being produced by our artists. Yes you can take home one of the pieces with all proceeds going to "The Friends of the Yellow Barn", our non-profit.

Why buy a painting by one artists, when you can have one done by 14 artists! Just think, if just one of us makes it big, the piece will be worth a fortune! I put my bid in!

Day 6- Martha Spak

Day 6- Martha Spak, one of the Yellow Barn's newest instructors, was our painter du jour on Tuesday. She enhanced the color qualities of the landscape painting by adding beautiful depth of color. Although she is an accomplished still life painter by trade, she had no problem working on both the landscape as well as the self portrait.

Day 5- Walt Bartman

Day 5- This Monday, our one and only founder/director of the Yellow Barn, Mr. Walt Bartman added his likeness to the self portrait/still life collaboration piece. He talks about his experience in his interview.

Walt will be painting periodically on each of the three paintings throughout the month, and you can find him in the stone tower on Mondays.

Day 4- Ann Wallace and Jackie Jouvenal

Visitors were thrilled to find two very talented artists working in the tower this Sunday, Jackie Jouvenal and Ann Wallace.
Ann Wallace spent the majority of her time on the carousel painting, working into the foliage and sky. She was able to capture push the sense of space in just a short period of time.

Jackie, traditionally a landscape painter, stepped outside her comfort zone and worked on the large abstract painting. She still denies the notion that she might have a future in abstraction.

Even though the work is abstract, there is a definite sense of a location.

Day 3- Gavin Glakas

Day 3- This Saturday, after his morning figure class, Gavin Glakas sped into the Stone Tower to work on the landscape painting. Gavin's realistic painting approach enhanced the under painting first started by Tom Semmes the day before.
Tomorrow, we welcome two artists to the studio who can build upon the already great work.

Day 2- Tom Semmes, landscape, studio painting

On Day 2, Tom Semmes has given us a starting point on our large abstract piece, laying down a groundwork for the rest of the abstract artists. " I think that there are some interesting color combinations, especially the oranges and greens. Maybe the other artists can do something with that." Tom also has a hand in the landscape painting, starting an under-painting for one of Glen Echo Park's most famous landmarks. Tom will be back later in the month where we'll do an interview focusing on how the other artists have expanded upon his original vision.

The Collaboration of 14 Yellow Barn Instructors

For the month of February the Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery, which boasts 600 members, and 40 classes per semester, will be showing off the instructors at work that make the Yellow Barn one of the premier places to take art classes in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. Starting February 2^nd, the Chautauqua Tower (“Stone Tower”) 1^st floor studio, which usually houses one resident artist for one month, will display the collaboration between 14 instructors. The artists will be working on 3 large paintings in a relay style fashion; will display their unique styles and different approaches to painting. The 14 artist’s progress will be documented throughout the month with photographs that will be posted on the Yellow Barn webpage (www.yellowbarnstudio.com), Facebook, as well as YouTube broadcasted interviews. These videos will allow each artist to discuss what they are working on as well as their different approaches and impressions of painting. At the end of the month, the three paintings will be auctioned off to benefit the “Friends of the Yellow Barn,” a nonprofit organization that provides support to the Yellow Barn by bringing in visiting artists, special events as well as class room equipment. The Yellow Barn Instructors invite the public to visit the space, ask questions and bid on the final pieces.

The Chautauqua Tower Studio will be open to the public February 2^nd through February 27^th, Tuesday thru Sunday. A schedule of each artist’s participation will be available on the Yellow Barn webpage.
